Dr Omar Usmani is a consultant chest physician based at Royal Brompton Hospital, as well as a clinical senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. Dr Usmani qualified in medicine at King’s College London. He trained in respiratory and general internal medicine at St Thomas’, King’s College and Bromley hospitals. He did his PhD at Imperial College, London, with his research work published in BBC News’ Online Stories on asthma treatments and coughs. In 2005, he received the Best PhD Thesis Prize at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. He also received an Alavi-Mandell Award from the American Society of Nuclear Medicine. These awards were related to inhaled aerosol science and drug delivery to lungs.
