Professor Raj Thakkar

GP, Primary Care Cardiology Lead, Oxford AHSN, Honorary visiting professor, Cardiff University Medical School and President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society

Raj trained at UCL and in the Oxford Deanery. His varied roles include working as a GP partner since 2004, primary care cardiology lead for the Oxford Health Innovation Network and national primary care workstream co-lead for the cardiac transformation programme (NHSE). He is also on the national expert advisory group for lipids, heart attack, heart failure and valve disease. Raj is the President of the Primary Care Cardiovascular Society, Honorary Visiting Professor at Cardiff University Medical School and works in industry. Previous roles have included Clinical Commissioning Director for Bucks CCG/BOB ICB in planned care, Cardiac Lead for the Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network, and atrial fibrillation champion for NHSIQ Thames Valley.

Raj has worked as a presenter on BBC Radio and is a medical writer, speaker, and advisor. He has written and published over 200 articles and several books including the MIMS consultation guide which won the BMA book of the year award in the category of medicine, 2012. He has achieved two atrial fibrillation pioneer awards, was a national finalist for GP of the year in 2017 and a national HSJ finalist - 2019 for his work in atrial fibrillation.
