Not All Emollients Are Created Equal; Understanding Lipid-Based Barrier Repair.


- Barrier Repair versus Hydration: Conventional emollients primarily provide transient hydration, whereas formulations containing physiological lipids demonstrably enhance stratum corneum structure and barrier integrity, reducing susceptibility to irritant and inflammation. 

- Physiological Lipid Replacement: Topical supplementation with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids rebalances the stratum corneum lipid profile and improves lamellar organisation, resulting in measurable improvements in skin barrier function and improvements in symptoms in eczema prone skin.
